Self Care *insert prayer hands emoji here*

Aight lads listen up.

I am always for self-care. Always, 100%, every time.

Except the thing is, I think we've glorified self-care into some pretty, pampering ideal.

And yes, sometimes self-care is drawing yourself a bath and soaking for an hour because you've been really stressed out and you just finished a big project. Sometimes self-care is making yourself a cup of tea or drinking water with a dash of lemon because you've just made it through a panic attack and you need to rehydrate and ground yourself. Sometimes self-care is just letting yourself be hugged while you cry because that teacher is just so frustrating and you don't understand anything they're saying and they can't understand any of your questions.

But you know what else? Self-care isn't always that nice. Sometimes, self-care is realising you've been sitting and watching a show for four hours and you need to get off your butt and clean the darn house. Sometimes self-care is wiping away the angry tears and organizing your school supplies because the mess they are is not helping you or anyone else. Sometimes self-care is doing a deep clean of your bathroom because no one else is going to and you know it's something that needs to be done.

Self-care doesn't always have to be immediately beneficial to your mental health. Sometimes it's long term beneficial to your physical health. Sometimes it's something that you don't want to do.

Sometimes self-care is taking that antibiotic that hasn't been going down the easiest the past four nights. Sometimes, self-care is letting go of a sweater that a toxic person gave you and you love, but it brings back memories of them every time you wear it. Sometimes, self-care is letting go of the person you've considered your best friend for years because you know that they effect you negatively. Sometimes self-care is ugly, messy crying and then getting up and going to your next class. Sometimes self-care is letting people know what's going on with you. The mess, the stress, the gross, nitty gritty.

Self-care isn't always pretty. It isn't always fun. It doesn't always seem helpful or productive, but I promise, it will help sometime.
